How to Stop Strangers From Finding Your Telegram Account

Updated: 2025 • Privacy & Safety Guide

By default, Telegram tries to make it easier for people to find you using phone number, username, contact syncing, and nearby discovery tools. But the downside is obvious:

Strangers, spam accounts, and unknown users may be able to find or contact you unless you change a few key privacy settings.

This guide shows every setting you need to change to stop unknown people from finding you on Telegram.

1. Hide Your Phone Number (MOST IMPORTANT)

Your phone number is one of the most common ways strangers can locate your Telegram profile.

Steps:
  1. Open Telegram
  2. Go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number
  3. Set Who can see my phone number to:
    “Nobody”
  4. Set Who can find me by my number to:
    “My Contacts”

This prevents people who have your number from discovering you unless they are in your phonebook.

2. Disable “People Nearby” and Location Discovery

Telegram’s “People Nearby” feature broadcasts your profile to others around you if enabled.

To turn it off:
  1. Open Telegram
  2. Go to Contacts → Find People Nearby
  3. Tap Stop showing me

If it’s enabled, strangers within your area can see and contact you.

Even if you don’t remember enabling it, check. It only takes one accidental tap to turn it on.

3. Disable Contact Syncing

Telegram may upload your contacts automatically to help users find each other — including strangers who saved your number.

Turn it off:
  1. Go to Settings → Privacy and Security
  2. Turn off Sync Contacts

Optional: You can also delete previously synced contacts:

  1. Tap Privacy and Security
  2. Tap Delete Synced Contacts

4. Control Who Can Add You to Groups

Strangers sometimes add random accounts to groups manually or via bots.

Fix it:
  1. Settings → Privacy and Security → Groups
  2. Choose My Contacts

This eliminates random group spam.

5. Restrict Who Can Message You

You can stop unknown accounts from messaging you directly.

  1. Go to Privacy → Messages
  2. Choose:
    My Contacts

This setting alone prevents strangers from writing to you first.

6. Disable Username Search Exposure

If you have a public username, anyone can search you.

Your choices:
  • Change your username to something non-public
  • Remove your username completely

Go to:

Settings → Username

7. Bonus: Hide Profile Photo From Strangers

If your privacy is a priority:

  1. Settings → Privacy → Profile Photo
  2. Select My Contacts

You can also block individual users.

8. Optional: Anti-Spam Tips
  • Block any suspicious contact immediately
  • Never show QR code publicly
  • Don’t share username in open groups
  • Enable two-step verification

Final Thoughts

With a few privacy settings adjusted, strangers can no longer:

  • Find you by phone number
  • View your profile photo
  • Message you
  • Add you to groups
  • Discover you via location

This turns Telegram into a much more private and secure experience.
